Grain is usually discussed as decoration. It is really a data set.
One ring, two seasons
In a temperate climate a tree grows in a burst when water is plentiful, producing large, thin-walled cells – the pale band. Later in the season growth slows and the cells become small and thick-walled – the dark band. One pale band plus one dark band is one year.
Wide rings mean a good year: water, light, room. Narrow rings mean a hard one, or a tree crowded by neighbors. A board with rings that suddenly widen usually came from a tree whose neighbor fell, opening the canopy above it.
Why the same log yields different-looking boards
The figure you see depends almost entirely on how the log was cut relative to the rings.
- Flat sawn cuts across the rings and produces the familiar cathedral arches. It is the most efficient way to break down a log and the most common lumber you will find. It also moves the most in width.
- Quarter sawn cuts roughly perpendicular to the rings, producing tight parallel lines. It is more wasteful and more expensive, and it is noticeably more stable. In oak it also exposes the medullary rays as dramatic flecks.
- Rift sawn targets a consistent straight grain with no flecking – the most wasteful and the most uniform.
Figure is usually stress or damage
The prized patterns are anomalies. Curly or tiger figure comes from wavy grain. Bird’s eye is a distortion whose cause is still debated. Burl is a growth deformity – the tree’s response to injury or infection – and its chaotic, interlocked grain is precisely why burl is unstable, difficult to work, and beautiful.
Crotch figure comes from the fork where a limb meets the trunk, where fibers from two directions collide.
Why we care on a job site
Grain direction tells you which way to run a hand plane, which face of a board will cup, and which boards to place where in a panel glue-up. Arranging boards so their growth rings alternate is an old habit that keeps a wide panel from bowing in one direction. None of that is aesthetic. It is just reading what the tree already wrote down.
