There is a category of woodworking that treats metal fasteners as an admission of defeat.
A tradition built on subtraction
Traditional Japanese carpentry developed an extensive vocabulary of joints in which two timbers are shaped to interlock so thoroughly that the connection resists forces in multiple directions without nails, screws or – in many cases – glue. Some are used to splice two beams end to end so seamlessly that the joint is nearly invisible from outside; the interlocking geometry is entirely internal.
These were not decorative exercises. They were structural solutions in a place with limited metal, abundant excellent timber, frequent earthquakes, and a building tradition that expected structures to be disassembled, repaired and reassembled.
Why interlocking geometry survives earthquakes
A rigid connection transmits force directly and either holds or breaks. A complex timber joint has some capacity to move, absorb energy and settle back. Traditional timber frames tend to flex rather than shatter, which is a substantial advantage under seismic load.
The tools tell the story
Japanese saws cut on the pull stroke rather than the push. A pulled blade is in tension and can be made much thinner without buckling, which means a narrower kerf, less waste and a more delicate cut. Japanese planes are also pulled, and their blades are laminated – a hard, brittle steel edge forge-welded to a softer iron body, giving an edge that takes extreme sharpness backed by a body that will not shatter.
The entire toolkit is optimized for precision over speed, which is exactly what joints requiring fractions of a millimeter of accuracy demand.
What a working shop takes from it
We are not cutting temple joinery for a kitchen renovation, and it would be dishonest to suggest otherwise. But two ideas transfer directly and we use them constantly: cut to the line rather than fitting with filler, and design connections so they can be taken apart for repair.
A joint that can be disassembled is a joint that can be fixed in thirty years by someone who is not you. That is a real design goal, not a philosophical one.
